Quilt Guild Meeting: May 20, 2025

24 members attended our May quilt guild meeting which was led by Jo Ann Bardeen.   We welcome our 2 new members, Nancy Miracle and Berry Leigh.

Old and New Business

We said good bye to our longtime member, Miyoko Matsuda, who is moving off island to Shoreline.  Miyoko has been a member since 1988. We will surely miss her and hope she will be back to visit.

Margot Loeb, a member of the guild for many years, has died.  She was 101 ½ years old!  Members shared memories of her.

Denise has set up our website.  VIQG.org   Check it out.

Our guild supports the Fred Hutch quilters who provide quilts to patients in Comfort Care at UW hospital and in the Harborview Trauma unit and American Heroes quilters whose quilts go to our wounded warriors, Viet Nam vets, and associated personnel who keep our country safe. The guild voted to donate $500 to each of those charities.

Quilt Show News

Georgia reminded everyone that she is making up the raffle baskets for the quilt show.  The contents of these baskets will be unused quilt related items including notions, fabric (e.g. fat quarters, jelly rolls), rulers, or any other sewing items. Please bring these donations to Georgia.

Kasia sent around a signup sheet for greeters and docents.  Greeters sit at the front door and sell tickets. Docents walk around the exhibit answering questions and interacting with the guests.  Everyone who displays a quilt at the show is expected to sign up for one of these positions.  There are plenty of openings:

Saturday 28

8:45-11:15 need 2 Docents

11:15-2:45 need 1 Docent

2:45-4:14 need 3 Docents

Sunday 29th

8:45-11:15 need 1 Greeter and 2 Docents

2:45-4:15 need 1 Greeter

Please contact Kasia (KasiaVashon@icloud.com) to volunteer for these spots. If you will not be present for the show, please volunteer for another activity to help out (see below for some of the activities where you could be involved).

Georgia passed around a signup sheet for members who are interested in doing demonstrations of hand work (applique, hand quilting, etc.) at the quilt show.  The shifts are 1-2 hours long and there will be two people on each shift. Demonstrations always garner a lot of attention at our shows and we hope inspire would be sewers.  Contact Georgia if you wish to participate but were unable to sign up at the meeting.  (vashongg@gmail.com)

Barb sent around a signup sheet for setting up/taking down the quilts for the show. The stands, etc., are being stored in John Singer’s barn.  The plan is to pick them up at 6:30 AM on Friday (June 27th) and transport them to Sawbones. Contact Su (suzandewalt2@gmail.com) if you have a pickup truck and can help.

Posters for the show will be put up around town (you can see the poster on our website). Contact Tish (kanattish@gmail.com) if you wish to help distribute them.

Su would like to get your quilt show display quilt entry forms as soon as possible so she can begin typing them up.   One option is to mail them to her at home (Su DeWalt: 11500 103rd Ave SW).  The form is attached below.  Please bring your quilt to the next guild meeting.  Each quilt should be in its own clear bag (Su will provide the bags).  All the quilts on display need to have a sleeve  for hanging them and a label.  These can be sewn on or just pinned.  After the show, Su asks that everyone leave so that the committee can gather up the quilts.  Once they have them all organized, members can return to retrieve their quilts.

Barb provided instructions for making a basic hanging sleeve: Cut a piece of fabric 7” wide and a little shorter than the width of the quilt.  Sew the ends under then stitch to make a tube.  Sew or pin the sleeve to the quilt along the top.  To make a gusset, iron a crease ½” up from the sleeve bottom on the quilt side and sew or pin the crease to the quilt.

The Beachcomber is interested in writing up an article about our quilt guild and our upcoming show.

Show and Tell

Andrea showed us a soft colored baby quilt made of disappearing nine patches and a quilt made from the leftovers of the tube quilt challenge.  She also brought 2 quilts for American Heroes, one consisting blocks with strips and a 4 patch, the other a center of color with concentric frames.  We are always amazed at her ability to turn leaders and enders into beautiful quilts and to turn simple quilt blocks into wonderful quilts.

Donna had two quilts, one of luscious blues and turquoises, the other made up of large flying geese and rectangles.

Janice suggested we take a look at The Quilt Binding Bible: 25 Flawless Finishes; Techniques & Troubleshooting by Marci Baker which is available through KCLS.  She had two great quilts to show us.  One was a colorful large star with patched borders, the other a baby quilt with a large V.

Barbara had acquired 2 quilt tops that she sandwiched and finished.  One she hand-quilted.  The other was a quilt of baskets in purples, pinks, deep greens, and one yellow.   Both were so pretty.

Georgia brought in her adorable wool and flannel bees and beehives quilt.  She also had a quilt made up of different paper pieced gold/yellow stars that was part of the “Stars Challenge” during COVID –  it was stunning.

Kasia wowed us with her umbrella quilt which she hand-appliqued and quilted.  This quilt was constructed across several continents.
