27 members attended our January quilt guild meeting which was led by Jo Ann Bardeen. We had two
guests, Sharon Briskman (who rejoined) and Leann Doussett.
Old and New Business
Su confirmed that the 2025 Quilt Show will be held at Sawbones. We are on their books for the last
weekend in June the 28th and 29th, with set up dates on the 26th and 27th.
If you have not already done so, please pay your dues ($30) for 2025. Checks should be made out to the
Vashon Island Quilt Guild. Please mail them to Sharon Aukland at 9718 SW 268th St on Vashon, 98070.
We thank Miyoko, who has collected our grocery receipts for many years. Tish graciously volunteered
to take over this responsibility.
Marian announced that Luna Bella, the consignment shop, is opening up sewing instruction classes in
the studio next to the shop. This is most likely going to be centered on garment construction. Marian
has contacted her to ask her to speak about this at our February meeting.
Sue Nebeker wanted to inform the group that she is not allowed to be on FaceBook so asked that no
one take it personally if she declines an invitation. American Heroes needs help with quilt top
construction and bindings. Please contact her if you can help, at blueberryhillfabrics@comcast.net.
Sue had a photo showing the shipment of 100 quilts (500 pounds!) that she just sent to Qatar. Amazing!!
Heidi Grimsley sent a thank you note to the guild for our participation in the Christmas Toy Drive.
Katherine recommended members go to the Fiber Arts Museum in La Conner. https://www.qfamuseum.org . The Red Dress is on display there until March 2nd . She says it is well worth the trip. She also recommends going to the VCA’s Birds in Flight exhibit. The handwork there is stunning.
Andrea informed us that VIPP is looking for volunteers. Please go to their web site if
interested. https://vipp.org
Ivy suggested we get involved with the Latino middle school craft program at McMurry. Interested
members met with her after the meeting to come up with a plan. Contact Ivy if you were not present
but would like to participate or find out more, ivyhaley@msn.com.
Today’s Speaker
Georgia and John Galus prepared a wonderful presentation making us aware of some of the information
and tools available online. First, John introduced us to The Quilt Show (https://www.thequiltshow.com). This
site offers instructions for many different techniques from world leaders in the quilting industry. There
are videos to inspire and educate you on new notions and tools as well as new quilt ideas. You can
search for classes in areas of interest. Members can join a Block of the Month class which includes
downloadable instructions and videos that walk you through techniques. There are free videos on
YouTube as well as a free trial subscription available from The Quilt Show web site. Subscription prices
range from $4.95/month to $49/year.
The Featherweight Shop (https://www.singer-featherweight.com) is a good source of information on how to
service your Featherweight. There are maintenance tutorials and a shop with useful parts and add-ons.
The last site he introduced us to was an application called PreQuilt (https://prequilt.com). This app
allows you to plan your quilt with blocks you construct. You have the opportunity to interview various
fabrics in your blocks by importing fabrics from collections, online stores, or photos and placing them in
your block You can switch around the fabrics to visualize the effects of different fabrics in various
locations. There are videos that show you how to manipulate the program to get the results you are
aiming for. It will calculate the amount of fabric you need for your quilt. The site has a trial version that
will not save your work but that allows you to experiment with the app to see if it would meet your
needs. The cost of this application is $7.50/month or $50/year.
Tube Quilting Challenge
This was the month for those participating in the tube quilting challenge to bring in their creations. It
was truly amazing to see the variety of quilts that could be made using this technique. These quilts will
be displayed at our show in June.
Show and Tell
Jo Ann had made a very cute baby quilt from the fabrics we got from our Clothworks speaker. She also
brought in a quilt that Toodie had rescued that needed a new home. Christine adopted it and said it
may end up with her dad in England!
Sharon had quilted a Big Foot panel lap quilt. The panel was really ingenious incorporating a quilt block
print in the border as well as Mr. Big Foot.
Andrea made a beautiful soft blue quilt from her “crumbs”, eliciting a whole discussion about leaders
and enders and how she uses them. (Bonnie Hunter is a good source of information about leaders and
enders.) Using the leaders and enders technique she also made an American Heroes quilt of rectangles
set on end. Tired of throw away wrapping paper, Andrea displayed drawstring bags she made for
wrapping holiday presents this year as well as wrappers made using the Furoshiki technique. These
elegant wrapping techniques put wrapping paper to shame.
