January 20 Meeting Minutes

Time 10 am at the Lutheran Church

Present      26 members

Meeting chaired by Denise Lynch who welcomed the new members and new board.

Synopsis of meeting:

Welcome and introduction.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Update from Small Groups about meeting plans (outlined formally in the Small Group section following) by Barbara G.

Discussion of Sew Day and what techniques are being taught. This month is curves. Several people indicated they had brought things for teaching and making curves. I will outline them in the section below if you are interested.

It was suggested by Marian and Andrea that if you have any ideas for sew day, or requests please let the board know. One of the ideas was to create a quilt using Stack and Whack as a process.

A long discussion about the Fire Department quilts included: Kathy Pierce has donated batting. You can just text her to arrange that. We are still trying for 22 quilts with a spring goal that is totally flexible. The specifications for each quilt are 63” x 95” and on the website. Your key to the Members Login page on the website is staying current with your dues – a password will be emailed to you when you are current.

Several people volunteered to quilt the finished tops: Barbara, Jo Ann, Kathy and Chris – please make arrangements directly with them.

Our $30 annual membership dues are due.  Please get them to Sue Nebeker and if you are having difficulty paying for this, please let us know. They could also be mailed to:  VIQG, 9731 Elisha Lane, Vashon 98070.

Susan Lewis, our website manager, has added a Resources page to our website under the Members Login tab. Please let her know if you have resources, video links, details for projects, etc.

Thanks to Tish for taking on the photographer position!

GUILD BUSINESS

Next month will be our mini-auction.  This is in response to Anne Rindge releasing much of her stash in preparation for moving.

Andrea and Marian brought us up to date on future plans for programs including sewing space tours (which she is hoping several folks will offer up their sewing rooms to become part of the tour)

Kathy outlined the Challenge Blocks monthly plan:

  1. Introduce the block or technique the first month
  2. Demonstrate on sew day that month and the following month
  3. Continue production and learning over the next month and troubleshoot
  4. Bring in the finished piece to show and tell on the third month.

Our guest speaker was Karen Biondo from VIGA, herself a farmer on the island. She came to talk a bit about VIGA and expressly about the Farms Bucks program which disperses over $300,000 in farm/food access each year. She explained the way that the program supports both farmers and those who are food insecure.

Chris followed up with an explanation of the quilt that Vashon Island Quilt Guild is making to leverage funds for farm bucks for VIGA. At this point over 12 people have volunteered (thank you!) to create a section of this custom designed quilt, which VIGA will show this summer and use to raise money. It will be raffled off in September at the annual VIGA fundraiser. ALL levels of quilters are encouraged to participate!! Every stitch you make brings food to a table of a family on Vashon Island!  Contact Chris for more information.

Show and Tell followed with several people showing their work: Su DeWalt  showed a quilt built around a sawtooth star, Pat and Judy had made an enormous quilt from batiks for the fire department, Jo Ann showed a quilted secondhand Grannies quilt top, which more than one member might have recognized, Kathy had a Fire Department quilt, Sharon showed mugrugs, and Andrea showed an American Hero’s quilt.  Pictures of all this incredible work will go up on the website and Facebook page in the next few days.

Dates to remember:

The membership meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of the month will be followed by “sew day” on a trial basis and continuing if successful. Bring your lunch, a snack or whatever will keep you ‘sewing” throughout the rest of the day (3:30-4ish)

As of this email, we will no longer run board meetings on the same day as Sew Day. This took too long, and it was felt that we may have sidelined the sew day group as a result. Our apologies if you were waiting or assumed that there would be no sew day. As a result, we are moving the reveal meeting for the curves challenge a month into the future.

Small Groups: ALL are welcome-if you are a master or just learning or want to learn or have questions you should come and tap into these groups…or just sit and join in a great conversation. Please note, times and locations are all different.

Featherweight: Meets the 4th Tuesday of the month from 9-3 at Barbara G.’s home. January 27th is the next meeting.

Machine Quilters group meets Monday the 26th (which is the 4th Monday of the month) at Jo Ann B.’s house from 1-3. This meeting changes locations.

Applique group next meets on the first Tuesday of the month (Feb 3rd) at Judy Dohms (this is a set meeting place) from 10-3. Bring a snack or lunch.

Future plans:  Complete the VIGA community quilt by the middle of June and donate to VIGA to use to raise funds for “Farm bucks”.

Set a date for the Sewing Places tour.

Volunteer opportunities

Looking for volunteers to complete 2 more pieces of the VIGA quilt and a dedication panel for the back.

Volunteers for the Sewing Space tour this summer.

We are looking for someone to coordinate a Field Trip to a Quilt Show – possibly to the QA (Quilters Anonymous) show in Monroe, March 13-15.  Please let Denise know if you are interested in heading this up.

The board is thinking about putting on a Mini-Quilt show later this year since we do our major show every other year.  We are looking for someone to coordinate this with the library and perhaps the vendors in town.  Please let Denise know if you are interested in heading this up.
