Quilt Guild Meeting: August 19, 2025

26 members attended our August quilt guild meeting which was led by our president Kathy Pierce.   We were so glad to welcome returning member Mary Woodring and guest Barbara Stratton.

Old and New Business

Kathy delivered 11 quilts donated by guild members to DOVE who was very appreciative.  She read us a lovely thank you note from Heidi Jackson.

A reminder to stop by VCA to see Donna Liberty’s art.   Her work will be displayed through August 31st.

Andrea announced that VIPP is in need of volunteers.  Contact her or VIPP directly if you are interested.

Sue Nebeker recently delivered 120 American Heroes quilts to Afghanistan.  Amazing!  She needs help binding more quilts (please contact her if you can help (blueberryhillfabrics@comcast.net).  Sue is also helping clear out a house owned by descendants of Teddy Roosevelt and brought linens that the family does not want to our meeting.   Members who found linens they wanted donated to the American Heroes batting fund.

Su Dewalt informed us that there is a new fiber arts gallery in Vancouver WA, the William Scofield Gallery.  A field trip to check it out drew interest from our members.  Date(s) and a signup sheet will be discussed at September’s guild meeting.

September is election month for the Quilt Guild’s 2026 board of directors.  Kasia (kasiavashon@icloud.com), Su (suzandewalt2@gmail.com), and Barb G (guerena39@gmail.com). volunteered to make up a nominating committee to facilitate this process. Contact one of them if you are interested in serving or want more information about the requirements of each position. Term limits and other considerations have created a situation in which most of the current board will not be on the board in 2026 so there are plenty of opportunities.

Georgia reminded us that October is our auction month.  Members donate sewing related items that other members bid to own.  We always have a wonderful time.  Please start collecting items you may wish to donate.  She asks that if you have books on a similar subject or a set of magazines that you tie them together to sell as a group.

Su’s rowing club sponsors Passport to Pain and a No Bash Trash barbeque following the event.  She asks that anyone who is looking to get rid of cloth napkins or who sees them for sale at Granny’s let her know.  After the event they will be given to the Episcopal Church to use at their various functions.

Our Program for August:

We are a diverse group of quilters with interests ranging from art quilts to traditional bed quilts.  As such we welcome a wide assortment of speakers and topics.  But as a small group we have limited resources.  Kathy opened up a discussion asking for ideas for 2026 meetings.  There was talk of collaborating with other local quilt guilds.  Could we jointly invite speakers?   Could we join classes they have organized?  Would members of other guilds want to come talk to us about their activities and/or show us their work?   Georgia suggested some of our local artists might want to come speak to us.  A very popular event in the past has been touring each other’s sewing studios.  There was interest in doing that again. Su suggested we have little 10 minute “how-to” classes at our meetings, starting with best practices for cutting fabric and ending with a session on binding skills.  Barb suggested field trips to museums or to quilt/fabric/tool related enterprises.  There is already a plan to have a class in April on how to turn a quilt into an article of clothing like a vest or jacket.  Kathy encouraged us all to continue to think about this and share our ideas.

Our Quilt Challenges have always been a hit.  Our next challenge will center around different types of blocks.  We will be presented with a type of block, (e.g. square within a square, disappearing 9 patch, Y-seams, circles).  A member will talk about that block type and give construction tips and a time frame to complete the block.  The folks at Sew Day would help anyone needing additional information or instruction.   Kathy will start this off in September.  The first block is scheduled to be one using half square triangles.  Members are encouraged to bring any tools or tips they find useful for construction of half square triangles to the September meeting.

Show and Tell:

Andrea showed us an American Heroes quilt in which she framed “leader and ender” blocks with red or white sashing.   The frames set off the centers and made for a beautiful quilt.

Georgia and Barb have signed up for a Block of the Month quilt designed by Sarah Fielke called Slodki (which is Polish for “sweet”).  The blocks have solid backgrounds and up to three layers of appliqued pieces made from prints.  Georgia showed us a large book she made with interfacing pages to organize her pieces.  At the next Sew Day she will help anyone interested in constructing such a book.

Kasia brought in three terrific quilts she recently quilted.  One was off set squares in cool shades of blue.  One was big blue flower vases with bright flowers.  The third was a Tula Pink quilt with zig zag piecing shading from yellow to blue to pink.  Kasia says she hates the Tula quilt, a sentiment not shared by the guild.

Janice made 4 bright children’s pillow cases with bears and other novelty fabrics.  So cute!  And she made a sew-as-you-go framed block quilt that was so nice that her husband wants to keep it in their house rather than donate it J

Margaret, after claiming she has been way too busy to sew, had no fewer than 5 cheerful baby quilts.  Two were made of horizontal stripes, one was pastel blocks, one was bright spool-like blocks, and the fifth was tube pieced.  She suggested others consider making burp cloths out of flannel.
