25 members attended our April quilt guild meeting which was led by Kathy Pierce.
Old and New Business
Georgia has updated our stash of name tags. Anyone needing a new tag or wanting a different tag should see her.
Georgia also wanted to remind everyone that she is making up the raffle baskets for the quilt show. The contents of these baskets will be unused quilt related items including notions, fabric (e.g. fat quarters, jelly rolls), rulers, or any other sewing items. Please bring these donations to Georgia
Mike Urban has a Pfaff Tiptronic 2020 dual feed sewing machine for sale. It comes with ~10,000 needles. He is asking $645 or best offer. Contact Georgia for more information.
Su asks that we bring her our quilt show display entry forms as soon as we fill them out so she can begin typing them up. The form is attached below.
Barb suggested that at the next Sew Day, May 13th, members come by who want help making labels or sleeves for their display quilts for our quilt show. It would also be a good place to get suggestions for how to quilt your masterpieces.
Jo Ann made us aware of the upcoming Katherine L. White Invitational Choral Festival at the VCA from April 23-27. Groups from around the Pacific Northwest will be performing, including our own Vashon Chorale. Tickets and information are available at the VCA site: https://vashoncenterforthearts.org/kay-white-choral-fest/
Today’s Program
Today we talked about applique. The four major types of applique were discussed: machine applique, hand and needle turned, fused, and raw edge. Members brought in appliqued items and described techniques, tricks, and tools used to create them. The pros and cons of various marking tools were discussed as well as which fusible webs give stiffer or softer results and which shapes are easier for beginners.
Show and Tell
Margaret had 3 wonderful baby quilts (made by Margaret, quilted by Jo Ann) to show today as well as 3 great red, white, and blue American Heroes quilts.
Anne Blair also made an American Heroes quilt consisting of framed 4 patches as well as a baby quilt of inviting soft colored blocks.
Andrea made a beautiful disappearing nine patch quilt in blues, browns, and beiges for the VIPP Fur Ball as well as a smaller top of disappearing nines. She also made a bumble bee themed baby quilt. So cute!
Judy showed us her sweet baby quilt of small 4 patches with sashing.
Donna brought in four of her creations. They included a butterfly themed quilt, a baby quilt of soft colors, a quilt of a concentrically framed rectangle, and a gorgeous brown and burnt orange quilt. She never fails to astound us.
Denise used the sun and shadow pattern for her mystery fabric quilt. The big blocks of color are stunning.
Brette showed us a terrific painting she had made that will be in the May VCA gallery show. She titled the painting “Quilt Guild”. We all need to remember to stop by and see it when it is displayed.
Berry had 2 quilts to show us. One was orange and hot pink stars that wowed us all. The other was her own design on a light gray background with Henry Alexander fabric pieces framed in purples and golds. Very cool!
Jo Ann brought in a pretty lap quilt of geometric shapes. She also finished up a top that she acquired at our guild auction made up of large log cabin blocks. She will donate this quilt to the VIPP auction.
