28 members attended our July quilt guild meeting which was led by our president Kathy Pierce. We were so glad to welcome our two new members, Lisa Gates and Laura Leizear. They both learned about our guild from the Quilt Show! Yay! It was so nice to see our ex-president Vanessa (Barwick) Gannon who attended this meeting as well as Lia Bardeen, Jo Ann’s daughter, who sat in for her mom to introduce our guest speaker.
Old and New Business
Many guild members who participated in the mystery fabric challenge led by Kathy elected to donate their entries to DOVE. Those quilts were collected at this meeting.
A reminder that Ivy is the one collecting Thriftway grocery receipts.
Quilt Show News
Su and Denise provided us with a review of our Quilt Show. We displayed 123 quilts. More than 542 people attended. Most of the attendees learned about our show from the signs along Vashon Hwy. Word of mouth was the second most common way. Denise noted that she found the quality of the quilts in our show amazing and that it went so smoothly because so many members helped pull this show off. If anyone wants to provide feedback to Su and Denise to reference for our next show, please email them (suzandewalt2@gmail.com , lynchden@comcast.net). Note: The quilts in our show are on our website: https://viqg.org. Thank you Denise!
Our treasurer, Sharon, reported on the show’s finances:
The money made from the entrance fee was $2711.
The raffle baskets garnered $478.37.
Our expenses amounted to 861.69
We actually made $2327.68. Wow!
We are so grateful to Sawbones for allowing us to have our show in their facility. We have decided to thank them with cookies. Su delivered 7 dozen cookies in July and the staff was thrilled. The plan is to deliver cookies once a month through December. Members have signed up to bake. The team for each month will coordinate to determine the date they will deliver. The only work day that is not recommended is Fridays.
We are also grateful to John Singer who allows us to store our quilt show supplies in his barn. Christine moved that we buy him a $100 coffee gift card. Georgia seconded the motion and our members unanimously approved. Su says though he felt it was not necessary; he was very appreciative.
Our Program for July:
Lia introduced today’s speaker, Stuart Gordon Tribble. Gordon has worked in theater, film, and television on hair, makeup, floral, and costume design. He is also an excellent storyteller. We were entertained by hearing about his experiences on and off sets. It was fascinating to hear about such things as how clothes are aged and how many copies of the same outfit must be constructed if the scene calls for the person to be shot (before the shooting, the gun hole, some blood, lots of blood). Among the productions he has been involved with are Breaking Bad, The Sound of Metal, Longmire, Logan, Hairspray, Independence Day Resurgence. Avengers, Frozen, & Hamilton.
Show and Tell:
Katherine Y. had an amazing English paper pieced top made of silk hexagons that was created by someone in the Hudson River Valley. She has no idea how old it is. Suggestions were made for ways to restore it.
Donna L. showed us her blue and white quilt consisting of stars in the center, flying geese around those stars, set into a saw-toothed border. It is beautiful.
Andrea had two quilts for us. One was rows of vertical strips of various widths separated with horizontal sashing. Such a simple idea that was so lovely. The other was a quilt for her nephew who is getting married in August. This very lucky couple will be receiving a couch quilt of Ohio stars in greens and lavenders with sashing separators.
Laura, who joined the guild today, brought two of her quilts. One was an amazing Baltimore Album appliqued quilt that she made after taking a class from Mimi Dietrich (http://mimidietrich.com/home/index.html). The other was a terrific blue quilt machine appliqued with bears and birds and whales.
Kasia brought a cozy blue and white flannel quilt with pinwheel centered stars that she made in a class. Her instructor insists that the bad reputation flannel has for failing to last is due to the fact that many aren’t made with quality flannel. Kasia also had two bug quilts that were absolutely adorable.
Janice made two quilts for NICU babies with carousel horse panels and pinwheels. The pinwheels were perfect for setting off those panels. She also had a stunning bed sized single Irish chain quilt that was made using the quilt-as-you-go method. And she showed a lap quilt made of large blocks of fabric that again reminded us of her ability to turn simple constructions into things of beauty.
