Quilt Guild Meeting: December 9, 2025

Our December quilt guild meeting which was led by our president Kathy Pierce.  Susie Hill was our guest.

December is our annual holiday tea.  Christine supplied the china and silverware and, of course, the tea.  No one makes better tea than Christine!   The tables were festively decorated by Kathy, Chris, Marian, and Su. There was a buffet of delicious savory and sweet treats provided by our members.   Toys and donations were accepted for the John L. Scott holiday toy drive.  We played quilt bingo and enjoyed the festive event.

Old and New Business

Jo Ann reminded us that the chorale will be performing its holiday concert this weekend at VCA.  The shows are Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 3:00.

Our annual dues are $30 and are due by the end of January.  Please make checks out to Vashon Quilt Guild.  They can be mailed to 9731 Elisha Lane, Vashon or given to Sharon Aukland.

Kathy has purchased batting for the quilts we are making for the fire department.  She will bring it to the January meeting.  Anyone needing it before then should contact Kathy.

Challenge:

Half square triangles (HST) were the first topic in our new skills building challenge.  Participating members showed their blocks made using HSTs.  The next challenge is blocks containing circles, half circles, and/or quarter circles.  Georgia says there are a couple of common approaches to assembling these blocks.  One is inset sewing on your machine.  The larger the circle, the easier it is to do this method.  Margaret noted that batiks work especially well because they are less likely to stretch or fray as you are sewing these curves.  The other is to applique your circle on to your quilt top.  She showed examples of each of these techniques and offered to give more detailed guidance at the January 20th sew day (note: sew days will now be held immediately following our monthly guild meeting).

Show and Tell:

Andrea has been making holiday gifts.  She brought in cheerful coasters (the “mug rug” pattern is below) and pot holders, as well as a furoshiki wrapped package.

Pat’s Summer Rose quilt was a beauty made up of stars of pink and green with rectangular block “chains”.

Margaret brought in 3 colorful St. Joe’s quilts, one using a construction equipment motif, one with doll panels, and one had strips of fish in creamsicle orange.  Though she showed us 3 quilts, each of them had been made in triplicate. It’s always fun to see what she comes up with.

Respectfully submitted,

Anne Bell

From Jo Ann:

“MUG RUGS”

What You Need:

·         5 squares of fabric – 4.5″ square

·         1 square of iron-on pellon – 4″ square

What To Do:

1. Iron the pellon onto the back of the square that you want to use for the back of the coaster.

2. Fold the other four squares of fabric in half and press.

3. Lay the backing piece with the right side up and the pellon side down.

4. Lay the folded pieces on top with the folded edges all facing to the centre of the square.

Lay the four pieces in a circle with the folded edges into the centre then slot them together like the top of a cardboard carton with each piece having one end on top and the other end underneath an adjoining piece.

5. Stitch around the square about a quarter inch from the edge.

6. Clip the corners.

7. Turn through by gently opening up the square and flipping the folded edges to the other side. The pellon should end up in the middle.

8. Push out the corners with a knitting needle and press.
