Quilt Guild Meeting Minutes – July 21, 2026

Good afternoon! This is epic so a cup of iced tea and a good chair out of the sun for a bit will do the trick.

Denise called the meeting to order at 10:02.

Welcome to a guest; Mecky Chappelle (JoBerg the golden retriever who stays with Judy Dohm belongs to Mecky-come to hand sewing/applique and you can fawn over JoBerg too)

Denise began the meeting by hoping we are encouraging all members to attend and extending a welcoming note to all.

Ursula is up next for snacks (this will be further arranged as next meeting we are traveling between locations for the studio day). Thanks to Ivy for wonderful treats this week.

  1. The article about the guild in the Beachcomber https://www.vashonbeachcomber.com/ was read aloud by Denise. Thanks to Jo Ann! It looks like the firefighters’ quilts were well received and as always a treat to give.
  2. A small update on the VIGA quilt-they have reassessed and are going to set up the raffle a bit differently-to be announced (by them) later. Suffice it to say that they love the quilt, are concerned that they do it justice and want to raise the most funds they can with it.
  3. Small groups;
    1. Machine quilters-Last Monday of the month will be July 27, next Monday. The meeting place is Denise lynch’s house.
    2. Featherweight group will be the 4th Tuesday of the month, the 28th of the month which is next Tuesday. Location to be announced.
    3. Applique/hand sewing will be the first Tuesday of August (the 4th) at Judy’s.
    4. Sew day will be the 2nd Tuesday of August, the 11th at the Lutheran Church beginning at 9. Every other group meets at 10. Barb will show leaders and enders again. Is there anyone who has made a quilt using leaders and enders and could bring it along? I dropped the ball this month and promise to send out a notice next month!!
  4. A beautiful basket (looked right out of Dwell magazine) of lavender was shared by Janice. If you took any, Georgia sent along a tutorial  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1B0mdppS7p8  on how to make lavender wands-now this may seem off the subject, but many of us send along a packet of lavender with a quilt, or pack away a quilt with a lavender wand to keep the critters from making their homes in our quilts. It works!
  5. Kathryn is asking (and I suspect many are in this same boat) to send PDF’s on the phone if using the phone to send a document. Other formats are problematic.
  6. We filled out a survey from our leadership. If you were not in attendance or have something to add or volunteer for, we will be sending out another survey in a separate email.  
  7. Denise has secured the community van for September 25th which is a Friday. The van will be driving to LaConnor for a trip to the quilt museum. Su offered to drive if we have the need for a second van (and can secure one).Please let Denise know if you are interested in going on this field trip. The van can comfortably take 8.
  8. Kathryn commented about the quality and interest in the show in the Lynnwood event Center in which Denise has a quilt displayed. It is open most of the time and easy to access-well worth the stop if you are in the area.
  9. Next year’s quilt show is being accessorized with a challenge for those who wish to participate. Here are the particulars;
    1. Keep your quilt at or below 60 x 70
    2. Make the quilt or table runner or placemat (your choice of anything smaller than the 60 x 70) with your own fabrics but use the block titled ‘Mary’s Block” (aka “Friendship Block”). Margaret described this block and showed us a version of the quilt she made from the block. There are no rules about how you put the block together and you can easily create 8 different versions of a quilt with the same block.  The handout for this for this block is posted here: https://viqg.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Friendship-Square-Challenge-July-2026.pdf 
    3. A tutorial for creating this block can be found on Karen Brown’s website justgetitdonequilts.com and someone noted that there are many tutorials online (you tube, Instagram, pinterest). As we go along, there are likely to be several opportunities to learn more about this block at sew day or one of the small group meetings. PLEASE don’t be shy, ask!!
  10. Studio tour this next month on the 18th. During this meeting you will have the opportunity to visit and tour/ask questions of four different places in which we sew/create. This is a brilliant way to get inspired, to look at the way spaces are arranged for work, find a little perspective, and look at your own workspace in a new and creative way. We get to peek into the creative lives of those we are visiting while they share a bit about their sense of organization and surroundings. We will still meet at the church at 10 and proceed from there. Four studios are on the map at this point. If you want to join in, please let Andrea or Marian know ASAP. A notice will be sent later in the week leading up to the 18th. These sewing studios will be on the tour; Barb, Georgia, Chris, Sharon.
  11. Show and tell included, as per usual, gorgeous examples of the work being done by each of these people; Ann, Jo Ann, Margaret, Brett. I know I have missed someone and it is only because it is difficult to ogle and write.
  12. Andrea explained Stack and Whack which I will attempt to do again in the pages following the minutes. She did an excellent job of teaching us all-not easy when 22 people are going at this! Thanks to her great preparation and the brilliant idea of making this out of construction paper it looks like we have a great start on this technique.
  13. Between Andrea and Denise, several different examples of how you can use stack and whack were presented, from the sublime to the amazing. If there are more of you who have tried this technique and are willing to bring it to show and tell we can keep looking at the myriad of possibilities going forward.
